Routledge Companion to AI and Architecture Published Featuring CARL Research

Research from CARL has been published in “Chapter 14: Dynamic and Explorative Optimization for Architectural Design.” in Routledge Companion to AI and Architecture.

This chapter introduces the topic of multi-objective optimization for architectural design; the major challenges and limitations it poses; and potential ways digital optimization tools might be designed to fit the unique needs of the architectural field. Specifically, the chapter argues for the need of a new generation of digital design optimization tools that can provide a more explorative, interactive, and collaborative experience for designers. These new tools should engage and harness the creative imagination of the designer, while capitalizing on the speed and precision of computational processes in order to solve problems neither could solve by themselves. As a step towards addressing these issues, the chapter describes the development of a digital optimization platform called Design Breeder. This platform is demonstrated through its application on two different case study design problems at the building and detail scale respectively.
